Planned Iron Age town that pre-dates Roman conquest of Britain is unearthed near Reading

When John Cleese’s ill-informed revolutionary Reg famously asks ‘What have the Roman’s ever done for us?’ in Monty Python’s Life of Brian, he gets a very detailed response.

But even after conceding that the Romans gave the Judeans an aqueduct, improved sanitation, roads and public order, his fury still isn’t sated.

So Reg would hate to find out that the old empire may have claimed credit for more than its fair share of innovation in Britain.

It has long been assumed that the Romans brought town planning to the islands but that theory is now being challenged by the discovery of a what appears to be a planned town predating the Romans’ arrival.
